Your AI is not inconsistent
It is often answering you from a different perspective
than you imagined.
In this tranquil scene, all is right with the world –
but not completely.
Something here is not quite as it should be.
And yet it is not immediately obvious.
Do you know what it is?
The image has not changed…
Only your understanding of it; AI behaves in the same way.
When you ask a question, you assume:
- a particular meaning
- a structure
- a boundary.
AI does not share those assumptions.
AI responds to what is present using patterns it has learned.
So the answer you receive may seem appropriate and yet feel wrong.
When this happens, AI has not failed
– it simply answers a different version of the question.
Most effort with AI is focused on the point where it is used — adjusting prompts, retrying outputs, or refining wording.
This is the point at which the system is already resolving the task.
However, the underlying issue often sits earlier. Before the AI is used, the task may be:
- unclear
- missing structure
- a combination of tasks (for AI), even if we think of it as one task
The system is then left to interpret what has been asked, rather than operate within a defined set of expectations.
In these cases, behaviour cannot be stabilised through prompt changes alone. The work is not to refine the response, but to restructure how the problem is presented to the system.
You are not committing yourself if you step forwards.
